Style Analysis

William Faulkner broke his mold with As I Lay Dying in the sense that the writing style of the novel is glaringly divergent from his previous approach where he only utilized lengthy and complex paragraphs. This work of fiction, however, is told from the point of views of 15 different narrators in 59 different sections using the technique of “stream of consciousness”. With this method, Faulkner gave readers a chance to see into the minds of his narrators and decide for themselves as to which characters were mentally stable or unstable. Thus the overall style of the novel varied depending on who was speaking, each having their own distinctive voice. This technique often results in the same event being told from multiple perspectives and it is up to the reader to take part in the story in order to understand it.
